IHG Comprender La Economía Courses Back in Action
The Instituto Henry George's 40th and 41st and 42nd intensive "Comprender la Economía" (CE) political economy courses graduated 36, 34, and 21 students in March 2009, and August and October 2010, respectively. Course offerings had been sporadic from 2008 to 2010 due to the construction of the new CEIHG building. Once again, more than 90% of the CE course graduating students signed the IHG demonstrative petition expressing their support for a national study of a full tax shift to the LVT solution in Nicaragua. These latest courses experimented with more class meetings (originally 9, upped to 11, then 14, then 15) and used the all-new edition of Progreso y Miseria produced by the Instituto's Director, as well as more test questions. This foray into a more academically intensive course generated feedback indicating that to better harmonize with the capabilities and time limitations of the diverse body of students, less intensity might be the better approach. In response, the current CE XLIII course has trimmed back to 14 classes and will employ homework testing with fewer questions. Also, for the first time, students will be allowed one missed class, although the will also lose the right to hand in the take home test corresponding to the class they miss. New CEIHG Building Operational; IHG Gains NGO Status in Nicaragua
The new building for the IHG project became operational in mid-2010 despite some important construction still pending. Then in February 2011 the Nicaraguan ministry of interior bestowed NGO status on the IHG project under the name "Centro Educativo Internacional Henry George" (Henry George International Education Center). With the prestige of the NGO status come new opportunities for contact with other organizations, the Nica government, and the public at large.
The CEIHG building still has room for
improvement but it is basically functional.
Immediate plans include the presentation of georgist literature to various Nicaraguan government agencies; development of an architectural model and georgist economic proposal for the development of the Laguna de Tiscapa; a new georgist community building initiative for CE course graduates called the "Georgist Community Fund." The CEIHG intends to function as community educational center, with an international participation, offering seminars, workshops and classes on diverse subjects in ways that reveal how true sustainability and success result from the application of Natural Law, especially those of economic and social justice.
CEIHG hopes to show the Managua
authorities how they can increase public funds while stimulating
attractive development of this volcanic lagoon.
