21st, 22nd and 23rd CE Economics Courses Graduate
Managua, June 8, 2004

The Instituto Henry George's 21st, 22nd and 23rd intensive "Comprender la Economía" political economy courses graduated a total of 111 students on February 25th, April 14th, and Jun 2nd, respectively. The February course had 86 course participants and 54 graduates which seemed like an impressive increase, but this did not continue with the following two courses as these registered approximately 53 participants each (the course average). Despite the stats, contact with the hundreds of people who came to get applications indicate a strong interest and demand for the course, but also the sad fact that increasing economic and social insecurity make it more and more difficult for students to participate. IHG Imparts CE Workshops in Managua and Costa Rica
Managua, June 8, 2004

The IHG imparted a CE workshop on February 26 at Universidad de Ciencias Comerciales de Managua (UCC) to 64 Economics students, and a CE workshop (sponsored by CR Alderman Wendy Rockwell) to a small but influencial group of community leaders on March 21 in Santa Elena, Monteverde, Costa Rica, bringing the total of CE workshops to only two so far this year. The IHG is currently renewing its effort to arrange more workshops in the coming months in order to reach the IHG's goal of 20 workshops for 2004. The IHG's main limitation in imparting workshops is the lack of qualified teachers. To support that effort, the IHG is active with its twice-weekly Teacher Training course and Georgist conscious meetings with participation of up to 15 CE graduates per week, and has established a new IHG library with computer, video and print media for use by IHG program participants and visitors.

IHG Plans New Teaching Strategy to Reach More Nicaraguans
Managua, June 8, 2004

After three years of fairly successful results imparting a traditional classroom-style education program, the IHG project is reassessing its strategy for reaching the Nicaraguan public with the Georgist message of socio-economic freedom and justice. The IHG's experience has shown that Nicaraguans, as a group, are very capable of grasping the Georgist paradigm of economic justice and the remedy of the single land tax. With every CE course turning out yet another crop of graduates (many of who sign the CE application affirming support for the LVT solution), the base of Georgist supporters will soon reach 1,000, but the the segment of the population willing and able to participate in an academic type classroom process is limited by geographical access, academic preparation, and socio-economic circumstances.

Now, the IHG is working to convert the CE course to a dramatic style presentation in order to reach a larger and more varied public, on a national level, in a shorter period of time, but without losing the paradigm-jolting impact of the complete Georgist analysis and remedy. The proposed dramatic presentation will be based upon the argument and visuals of the CE course, and will include humor, song and melodrama (all favorites of Nicaraguan culture), and will be capable of being presented anywhere in Nicaragua by a production company made up of IHG volunteers. This work will also be taped and reproduced on video for distribution on VHS cassette and CD ROM. With this, the IHG will have the CE course (15.5 hours, imparted seven times a year in Managua), the CE workshop designed for groups (one day, 4 to 8 hours, two mobile projection units available), the CE dramatic presentation (two hours with discussion afterward), CE workshop summary and basic elements (Law of Rent, etc.) and drama on videos/CD. The drama element will also be integrated into the existing CE course and workshop.
